It has been four months today since the friars left St Mary's and Missions. Today we have been informed that a lay couple will be assuming administration of St Mary's and Missions. With this email we will be turning over access for all future postings.

Thank you for your love and support over the years. Please offer that same support to those who follow. The test is in the continuance of that which has been begin, while we have time, let us continue to do good!

St Francis is attributed with saying: “while we have time, let us do good!” I would hope that almost six years after arriving here in Above Rocks, we have been able to “some good?” Everything comes full circle. On the evening of August 16^th, 2005 we gathered here to celebrate Eucharist. Present at that “first mass” were: Fr Mike, Scheppy, Marc, Miss Lewis, Sr Claudette, Patrick Murphy, Mama “G”, Sr Jude, Fr Joe, Vernon, Mrs Brown, Chrisma and myself . . . today we gather around this same altar, to celebrate Eucharist, with the faith communities of: Holy Family, Cassava River, Our Lady of Lourdes, Rock Hall, St Mary’s, Above Rocks, and Sacred Hearts, Pinto.

When we arrived Msgr Albert gave us two charges: give the people good Liturgy and take back those schools. In his initial directives he went on: (1) stop the hand out mentality and preach stewardship and (2) encourage evangelization and catechesis.

We, the Friars: here present and those who have come and gone, committed ourselves to good liturgy, taking back the schools, mechanisms for charity, evangelization and catechesis. For the past six years we have made it a point to have this church open daily, and that the Sunday celebration of Eucharist is central to the life of the Mission. We have committed our selves to weekly Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for over five years – and this past Tuesday we gathered one last time for praise and worship, evening prayer and benediction.

We, the friars, have committed ourselves to taking back the schools – a return to some sense of order, good principals, weekly Mass and regular participation in school devotions, meetings and functions. We have made strides, BUT, we are far from finished in this area.

We, the friars, have tried to bring order to chaos and dignity to charity. We have preached, encouraged and participated in every evangelization effort that the vicariate or archdiocese has offered. We have supported, re tooled, and tried many avenues for effective Sunday School and sacramental catechesis.

I bring up these few points not to pat ourselves on our backs, but to encourage you . . . let you hear what the objectives were, and let the long term effects be the evaluation of our six years here.

Yes it breaks our hearts to be leaving – but as a seasoned missionary shared with me: the six years have prepared you for something Michael, and at the same time it has prepared the people of God for something. I don’t know what it is . . . You may or may not know what it is . . . and only time will tell.

Today after we depart – actually as of now, Tennessee Lewis, our own 10-A-C, is the Parish Manager. Tennessee will be the day-to-day, go to man until a permanent pastor or archdiocesan administrator is appointed. Tennessee will serve as the link with the chancery – but please, please do not take advantage of his nice side: he has no authority to give land, allow use of, lend out, etc… yes, he will make sure the auditorium is available: opened and closed when necessary. But that’s about it.

Lest we be remiss, and at the danger of omitting someone by name, suffice to say we owe a debt of thanks to many people who “while we have had time” have helped us to do good. Each of you know in your heart who you are – to each of you we say thanks! To those who have been somehow slighted or hurt – lest anyone have a heavy heart – we offer apologies and beg your forgiveness.

As we said from the first time we announced our departure – please do not honor us with gifts and praises, but honor us with continuing the charge that we have tried to do these past six years: work for good Sunday Celebrations . . . keep the schools under the Archdiocese – Catholic! . . . offer charity to those who are in need. . . continue to evangelize. . . and re-start Sunday School come September.

This is the gift we desire, a gift that keeps on giving. For as St Francis ends his testament: “I have done my part; may the Lord teach you yours!” AMEN!

MOP in Above Rocks

This morning we were joined by the Brothers from the Missionary of the Poor Community. There are 100 Brothers in Jamaica who minister to the poorest of the poor. They came to Above Rocks to say good bye to the friars and thank them for their work in Jamaica. Saint Mary's and Missions has collected food each week and delivered it to the MOPs to distribute to their poor. Saint Francis would be proud.

Today we reflected on the parable of the sower and the seed. For our Mission Churches it was the last time Mass will be celebrated by our friars. Next week our final Mass for all four Churches will be in Saint Mary's. The friars are grateful to God for calling us to serve in this rich soil of Jamaica. Below are some of the fruitful seeds. Camps Continue

Even though we have 10 days left in Jamaica, the Football Camp continues full swing. Over 60 footballers attended the camp from 9-12 each day this week. Thanks to our friends from Conneticut who fund this program each year, the kids enjoy this yearly event. Next week the kids hit the courts for the second annual basketball camp.

Thanks to our friends at St. Denis Church, Manasquan N.J. and St. Pio in Lavallette N.J., two of our Churches have been able to install new signs. The Archdiocese of Kingston and the Dioceses of Montego Bay and Mandeville encouraged all Catholic Churches to install common signs to show the unity of our faith. Although these signs are beautiful, we have encouraged all our people to be Living Signs of the love for Jesus Christ!

Today in his homily Fr Mike reminded us that we become the Body as we partake of the Sacrament and today the body is increased with the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist. Before Fr Joseph left in February 2008 he completed a beautiful piece of and for Our Lady of Lourdes, Rock Hall, which hangs proudly in the sanctuary. A year before he did a mural on the wall in Pinto's sanctuary of the Children Coming to Jesus. Before his departure we never got to a piece for St Mary's Above Rocks. But he did do a beautiful San Damiano Cross that has hung in the (now empty) sisters' convent. Now St Mary's can boast of a Joe Dorniak Original!

Prayer, Water and an Oxymoron

After 49 days we saw a trickle of water in the pipes and at day 56 we can say: okay today we got some pipe water. Thanks for the prayers for water. One should always be careful for what they pray. We are now in a seven day run of daily rain, with on and off flash flood watches and warnings. The reservoir is now over flowing and minor land slippages have occurred. On Sunday we had five sheep join us in Cassava River, four in Rock Hall, six in Above Rocks, and no one showed in Pinto. On Saturday the Office Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management [ODPEM] was scheduled to have an all day workshop, seminar and display. At midday it was announced that the ODPEM event scheduled for Saturday, June 4th, at the Wyndham Hotel was being postponed due to inclement weather. Imagine, in spite of rain Sunday Service goes on, people come out, but the ODPEM has to postpone . . .huh?

35 Days

Yes 35 days with no pipe water to speak of . . . why? The locals stole the pipes! After two weeks without water this go-round, we called and were informed that the pump was acting up and had to be serviced, so power had been cut. This past week, week 5, Fr Mike called N.W.C. (the National Water Commission) to ask if and/or when we might get some pipe water: oh Father, they stole the pipes. While the pump was off line, no water was flowing so the pipes were stolen - to sell for scrap metal. Meanwhile we suffer - and the folks without tanks, all the more, because someone stole the pipes for scrap metal.

Do you not know all that has been happening these days?

It all started back in February 2008 when Fr Joe was re-assigned state-side.Then Fr Brad came and stayed for just about two years, and then he took an assignment state-side.Most recently Br Joe came, stayed about 2 months, and asked t go home.

Each time that has left just Fr Mike and I here . . . our Rule calls for houses of at least three, our contract with the Archdiocese is also for three. We had hoped that our friars from Poland would send two friars to help us; on March 25^th they informed us they had no one to send. We hoped our Minister General could secure help from our friars in India or the Philippines, on April 13^th he emailed and told us there was no one to send.

Just one year ago, Fr Mike and I – last year April in Buffalo we stood before our Province Chapter and said – with Br Joe coming in August – we have the necessary three, we recommend we renew our contract. So we did.

On April 14^th – Fr Mike and I reported to the Province Council as it is now obvious that there is no third friar coming, what can we do? On Thursday, April 14^th our Council voted to withdraw from the Mission in Jamaica, effective 17 July 2011.

While we had always hoped that a third, or even a 4th, friar would come and join us, we now have our answer – there is no one in line to come and help, and our rule of three cannot be fulfilled, nor set aside.

So it is with a very heavy heart that I report to you today that as of Sunday, 17 July the Conventual Franciscan Friars, St Anthony of Padua Province, USA, will be leaving St Mary’s and Missions, and handing the Mission back to the Archdiocese of Kingston.

Like Fr Mike told us in his reflection: a stranger came and walked with the two on the road for a while – then they each went their way – changed by the experience of the Breaking of the Break. Though we each will go our own separate ways – may we continue to be united through the Break of the Bread

We thank you for your love and support over these past almost six years, and we pray you will continue to work with us – in proclaiming the Good News, until that last Mass on Sunday July 17^th. May the Lord give you PEACE!

Archbishop-elect is St Mary's College Grad

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed the Most Reverend Charles Dufour as the new Archbishop of Kingston.

Archbishop-elect Dufour, who is currently the Bishop of Montego Bay, is to be installed in his new post on June 16. His appointment comes as a result of the resignation of the Most Reverend Donald J. Reece, as Archbishop of Kingston, who had reached the canonical age of retirement. In a 15 April release, the Roman Catholic Church said subsequent notice would be sent out regarding time and other particulars for the new appointment.

Today at St Mary's and Missions - when we prayed for Archbishop-elect during the General Intercessions, there were looks of surprise. When mentioned during the Eucharistic Prayer there were smiles. When the above press release was read during the announcements, there was spontaneous applause - hometown boys makes good!

While a water incident during Lent is great food-for-thought, especially on the Woman at the Well Sunday, 21 days with minimal pipe water is pushing the metaphor. They tell us that the pump in the field is broken, that's why the water has been so scarce. Interestingly enough the boss downtown knows nothing of a broken, non-functioning pump, in our district. May the power of your prayers over come the shake down for cash that accompanies such water shortages. For many of our people they are bone-dry, and this morning one member of staff arrived with his five gallon bucket begging water, only to turn our pipe on and clouded water trickled out. We too are at the bottom of the tank (barrel). Pray, pray!

This past week we welcomed back Dr. Glasier and Nurse Jane from our sister parish of St. Louis Batesville IN. The medical team conducted clinics in our four Church Communities and were able to see over 250 people in a five day period. This year they were accompanied by their new pastor Father Randall Summers. Father Randy celebrated Mass, visited the sick and gave a hand in the pharmacy. We are always thankful for the relationship we have with our sisters and brothers in Batesville!

Getting To Know You

Last Thursday and Friday, Father Michael joined fellow missionaries from around the world and stationed in Jamaica for an inculuturation workshop. Various speakers from the University of The West Indies made presentations on Jamaican history, politics, economy and the role of men and women in the society. The workshop concluded with a panel presentation of local sisters and priests sharing their experiences of the Catholic Church in Jamaica.

Craig is an active member of the Class of '11 at Archbishop Curley High School. A member of the band and Franciscan Youth Ministry, and a varsity lacrosse and wrestling athlete. In the Fall Craig will be starting his collegiate journey at Stevenson College.

I took the Senior Service Week opportunity to Jamaica because not only did I want to make a difference in someone else’s life, but I wanted to experience a developing nation first-hand. I knew before ever making the journey that it was going to be different, but I never imagined the things I would learn on my trip; the most important was learning to be grateful. I never would have thought that after all I have learned in my eighteen years, that one of the best lessons I would ever learn would be from ten and eleven year old Jamaican children. After over ten years of Catholic education, I have undoubtedly been taught manners and how to say “please” and “thank you.” I have been taught how lucky I am to have the things I need. But, what we see as necessities in Baltimore, are delicacies in Above Rocks, Jamaica, West Indies. Some of these things include shoes, food, but most importantly, education.

At St. Mary’s [sic], Above Rocks, we spent much of our time working as tutors for the children of the All Ages School, which is for students in grades six and below. We tutored from 8:30 AM to 12 PM in a program known as Brain Camp; this program gives the children extra assistance in the areas of Reading, English, and Math. What shocked me was the amount of intelligence they had, and the progress they made during those days. During the Math portion, they handled concepts such as long division, and area and perimeter (new to them at the time) with little or no difficulty. At the beginning of the week, we began the Reading section by discussing books which children were reading on their own. On the first day, many of them were nervous about reading in front of us and asked us to read to them instead. By the end of the week, they couldn’t wait to read to us and many of them even finished their books. In English, we were teaching the children to write paragraphs about their daily routine. A ten-year-old boy, who read his paragraph to the class, wakes up every morning, ties up his family’s goat, walks a half-mile and back to fetch water, then takes a forty-five minute bus ride to school. This boy works so hard every day because the work needs to be done. He does all in which he can to make sure that he and his family survive. I remembered that as a senior preparing for college, I cannot afford to stop working hard if I ever hope to be successful.

I cannot even begin to describe how thankful these children were for the help they were receiving and how eager they were to learn every day. I learned from them how much time and energy it takes to affectively teach a concept and the amount of patience it takes to repeat the process again and again. I returned from the trip much more thankful for the effort my teachers and parents give day in and day out. Since our return from the island, my classmates and I have worked extremely hard to be resourceful and make the most of the opportunities given to us, because we have seen that those precious gifts do not come around every day. We are extremely appreciative for this service opportunity, and the life lessons we learned along the way. We pray each day that we will continue to be given the chance to rise to the occasion just as we did barely a month ago. Most of us have been accepted to colleges at this point and although we are moving on from the place that has given us so much, we will never forget the memories and the journey that changed our lives.

The Mission has been blessed with generous donations from our friends overseas. Many boxes of shoes, books, toys, etc have been shipped to us via Food For The Poor in Florida. We are also extremely grateful to Food For The Poor for shipping these donations to us at no cost to the Mission. We now ask one favour. Jamaican Customs are getting extremely difficult and there is a need to itemize each item that is sent into this tiny island nation. Before any package is sent to Food For The Poor, please e-mail either Father Michael Heine (fathermichaelheine@hotmail.com) or Brother Michael Duffy (bro_duffy@hotmail.com). We will send you a sign that we ask you to tape to the sides of each package in addition to listing what is being sent.

In Memoriam

+Mavis Turner, a long time member of St. Mary's Church, Above Rocks, passed after a twenty-nine month bout with breast cancer on January 3rd, 2011. Miss Mavis, Miss T, Momma, as she was affectionately known, was a faithful member of the Catholic Women's League (CWL), and in fact requested that she be laid out in her CWL uniform. This picture of Miss Mavis was taken several years ago when the BLOG was started because her family foreign never saw any pictures of her or her sister Molly on the BLOG. So +Miss Mavis for all your people, on the island and foreign, we extend our prayerful condolences, and may you rest in peace!

The End of an Era

Today marks the end of the ministerial presence of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist at St Mary's and Missions. The sisters, Mother Marcia and Sr Naomi, have served with the friars for four years and four months, and this morning their Mother General and Vicar returned with them to Kingston - Manley Airport back to Meriden, CT, before they are re-missioned to the Holy Land.

Truly we have been blessed by the sisters presence . . . the feeding program, the learning centre, weekly sick calls, girls group and the Remand Centre . . . to name a few. May the sister know of our love, and each time they have something in their shoe, it's us; and we too will remember them by pebble in our shoes. They go with God!

Deanery 6 Day

Yesterday we had our Deanery Day at Sacred Heart Church, Old Harbour. Donna Chambers, the MC for day, made it clear that the bathrooms attached to the church were for "clergy" use and that "porta-loos" were available for the guests. Much to my surprise did I find the following sign pasted to the door of the women's bathroom. Later in the day, during lunch, His Grace called me over, and pointing to the sign below said: "I never knew Deanery 6 was so progressive."

On Friday the Principal, Mr Kirlew, the faculty, staff, PTA and students of Cassava River Infant and Primary School (aka, Holy Family) prepared a wonderful, and heartfelt, tribute for Sisters Marcia and Naomi. West Conn is putting a fresh coat of paint on the newly re-designed JFLL (Jamaica For Lifelong Learning) Grade 9 Building. JFLL was in dire need of space so this Food for the Poor house that was supposed to be used as a changing room for the sport's teams . . . after years of abuse and mis-use . . . was taken back in August and re-designed for a large classroom, and a smaller (2 cubicle) changing room. During this Christmas Season we celebrate "the Epiphanies" of the Lord: to the town's folk and shepherds, to the kings and the powers-that-be, to the populous on the river bank, all the way up to His epiphany at the Wedding Feast at Cana. Tradition has it that on this day, as the Magi visited the home of Jesus, we begin the annual Blessing of Houses.

Traditionally we bless chalk and encourage our people to mark the lintel of their house, and every other year we visit and blesses houses (from now until Lent.) Each house is marked with the year, and the names of the Three Kings:

New Year's Day, World Day for Peace, the Solemnity of Mary . . . Today is the Octave Day of Christmas -- the Eighth Day of Christmas -- which now marks the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Ma ry, the Mother of God. It used to commemorate the Feast of the Circumcision of Our Lord and bore the title In Circumcisione Domini et Octav Nativitatis. It represented Jesus, the "Giver of the Law," as consenting to submit to the Law of Moses, and also as spilling His blood for the first time for the sake of mankind. Thus, it demonstrated not only the obedience of Jesus, but foreshadowed His Crucifixion.

The eighth day following His birth, Jesus was presented in the Temple and circumcised according to the Law of Moses. On this occasion, He was given the name Jesus, which the Archangel Gabriel had announced to the Virgin Mary.

Whatever you call it - Happy New Year from the friars and sisters in Above Rocks. May you and those you love, know the blessing of our new born King, today, and the whole year 2011. PEACE!

We welcome Fr Andrew Santamaura, one of our friars on Campus Ministry Staff at The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. Fr Andy made an offer to come and help for Christmas when we gathered for Chapter back in June. Fr Andy followed through on his word, and joins us to help with the Christmas and Holy Family celebrations. Here Fr Andy pauses for a photo with the people of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rock Hall.

While Fr Andy has been enjoying a good dose of Vitamin D (sitting in the sun on the porch), now he's following the "blizzard on the East Coast" on the Internet and the Weather Channel hoping he'll make his connections and up to see his mom in Connecticut. Thanks to our generous state-side donors, we were able to treat some of our children to a pre-Christmas evening out. Dinner at KFC, desert at famed Devon House in Kingston and a visit to the Jamaican Pegasus Hotel to see the Christmas lights made the night magical. Prior to our trip into the city, we paid a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Simpson, parishioners of our church community in Pinto. Carrying a birthday cake and a package of fish, we sang "Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary to this joyful couple who, in addition to celebrating Jesus' birthday on the 25th, have some celebrations of their own.

Yesterday, December 11, the youth of our four Church Community joined 50 other young people from our Deanery VI for an Advent Day of Prayer. They traveled up to Mt. Tabor in Golden Springs, Jamaica, to get away from the noise and lights of the commercial prep for Christmas. The day was conducted by Bill and Teresa Carroll, a newly married couple from Arizona. The are giving their first year of marriage as a year of service to the people of Jamaica. The day was a great opportunity for our youths to get to know other young Jamaicans as well as prepare spiritually for Christmas.

This past week the friars and sisters hosted a pre-Christmas gathering for the Consecrated Women and Men of the Archdiocese of Kingdom. the evening began with Evening prayer I for the Immaculate Conception and was followed by drinks and hors d'oeuvres on the back veranda of the Friary. Ham and roasted turkey (being carved by chef Tennessee) with all the trimmings were served in the St. Louis Educational and Social Center. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together as we prepare for the Lord's arrival.

From the last note our Choir Sings on Sunday night until 12noon Wednesday, we can vote, vote, vote for Saint Mary's College 444-8802. As a way to purchase valuable cell phone credits in order to vote, the College and Church Community have become very creative. On Fridays the student body is invited to pay $40 to attend a special concert after school. Under the direction of the PTA President baked goods are sold during lunch.

The Church has also gotten into the Choir mania. Marc, Tennessee and Above Rocks own Bobby Flay prepare the American favorite - hot dogs to be sold to the students and teachers. Every little bit counts. We all appreciate all those who have and continue to vote for St. Mary's College.

Today (Thursday) Tropical Storm Tomas was delayed just enough to allow the Choir to make it to the TVJ studios to tape Sunday's Show. They sang Michael Jackson's song - Heal The World.

Although they received "OK" "not bad"comments from the three judges (thus we will really need to vote a lot this week) we can be proud of their message.

Students were divided into the "World" symbolized by gangstas, pregnant teenager, unwed mother, etc and

"Healing" symbolized by nurses, red cross, etc.

On Tuesday, 28 September TD 16 organized around midday into Tropical Storm Nicole as the sisters were in route from Miami to Kingston airport. Our ride from the airport to St Mary's was punctuated with periods of heavy rain and distant lightening. By the time we arrived back at St Mary's the storm was starting to wreak its havoc. By 9pm the winds picked up and soon the power (electrical current) was gone. Wednesday, 29 September was a day of heavy downpours alternating with driving winds that blew rain under our doors and into our rooms. Needless to say it was a long day - no power and heavy rains, soon we saw the mud slides beginning and tree tops were snapped off. On Thursday, 30 September the rains had subsided into period bands of rain, consistent with the back side of the storm. Schools remained closed on Thursday, with some confusion between the Office of Disaster Preparedness and the Ministry of Education . . . On Friday the Ministry said that all school should open: the principal, a handful of teachers and one student reported at St Mary's All Age (519 students); at St Mary's College (920 students) the principal, vice principal and a dozen teachers reported to attend to the five students that reported to school.

Here we had road blocks and downed power lines that prevented buses, mini vans and coaster buses to make the rounds. The road re-opened, one lane, on Saturday; thus many of our people could make it to market.

TD or Tropical Storm; six of one, half dozen the other - both bring massive amounts of water that spells landslides in the hills and wide spread flooding down in Kingston. Lord, spare us from strong winds, floods and other natural disasters . AMEN!

Catechetical Sunday 2010 - Sunday School re-opens today at St Mary's, Above Rocks. This year we are using the Alpha approach - feed 'em, teach 'em and church 'em. We begin with songs and prayers, then a little breakfast; the lesson for the day and then attendance at the 11am Mass or Service. When Mohammad cannot come to the mountain, you take the mountain to him. On Saturday, 7 August the Mission went to the Monastery. St Mary's and Missions made their way into the enclosure of the Monetary of the Poor Clares, Chesterfield, NJ . . . via PowerPoint. If the sisters cannot come to the mission, we'll bring the Mission to them. The Chesterfield Poor Clares have been long term benefactors and prayer partners with the Mission since year one. It was with great enthusiasm that we took our presentation to the community, and with even greater enthusiasm was it received. After the presentation Fr Mike Lasky celebrated Liturgy, then off the the refectory for a greatt lunch and midday prayers. Today, the Feast of Saint Clare, we welcome our new friar to the Mission Team - Brother Joseph Schenk from Saint Bonaventure Province, Chicago. Brother Joseph arrived on Sunday afternoon and has been settling in and getting accustomed to the heavy August rains. This afternoon the friars, sisters and workers gathered in front of the TV to watch the Instillation of Bishop William Callahan, a friar from Saint Bonaventure Province, as the Bishop of LaCrosse Wisconsin. Of course, the rains began falling precisely at 2:00pm Caribbean Time - the time of the Instillation Mass - we lost our TV connection - even Saint Clare, patron of television, couldn't help - Life in the Missions...

Although Jamaicans are born with a football (soccer) at the end of their feet, the game developed in Springfield Ma, is beginning to catch on. This week we held the First Annual Basketball Camp. Not as popular as our Football Camp that saw 100 boys take the field, this Camp, although small in number, was not lacking in excitement! A few weeks ago King James decided to play for Miami. Well, 600 miles south there are some little Jamaicans "shooting" for his job!

Yesterday the friars laid to rest +Brother John Joseph Dolan, OFM Conv. Brother JJ was the Assistant General for the English-speaking Conventual Franciscan Friars. Brother JJ was a two time visitor to St Mary's and Mission in 2006 and 2008; he was instrumental in the establishment of the mission here in Jamaica. The noise coming from the St. Mary's Playfield this week didn't come from a vuvuzela in South Africa but from the excitement of over 75 boys attending the annual football camp. This year we had the biggest attendance as World Cup Fever continued to overflow on the Island Nation. Thanks to the Bolios from New England and other generous benefactors, each boy was able to receive special instruction, a camp t-shirt, a water bottle and bag. Our next sports camp will be at the end of the month - Basketball Camp.

This week is full of "School Leaving" exercises. Our little ones from St. Mary's Basic will move to grade one, our Grade 6 students will move to the high school level and our College students will face the world or continue their studies in Kingston. Congratulations to all!!

Brother Brain Newbigging has joined us at St Mary's, Above Rocks, and Missions for a six week stay. For the past many years Br Brian has been the backbone behind many of the improvements at St Hyacinth, Granby, MA and St Joseph Cupertino/ St Anthony Shrine in Ellicott City, MD. Br Brian is between assignments and is lending a hand with laying pipe, pouring cement and assisting with the physical plant(s). Br Brian's expertise goes beyond his handy man abilities - as a former paramedic, a field officer for the Chief Medical Examiner's Office, a volunteer fire fighter and a member of the scuba rescue team for Howard County. We welcome Br Brian and are very happy to have him as our third until August 3rd.

On Sunday the four church communities of Rock Hall, Pinto, Cassava River and Above Rocks gathered at St Mary's for the 11am Liturgy. A full house was on hand to hear Fr Brad preach his last Sunday sermon before he moves on to his next assignment. Fr Brad spoke of the four Eucharistic Miracles on the door of the cathedral in Germany and then tied those into his memories and experiences from his two (2) years at St Marys and Missions. After communion the youth group started the tributes and remembrances, leading the congregation in All I Ask of You is Forever to Remember Me as Loving You. Tributes and songs ended with the assembly imparting to Fr Brad the Franciscan Blessing before the dismissal with cake and punch to follow in the St Louis Educational and Social Centre. Fr Brad will be leaving on Tuesday 8 June for his new assignment Campus Minister at Western Connecticut State University, and residence at Sacred Heart Friary, Danbury, CT. As Miss Daphney sang:

The Security Forces continue to make progress in securing areas of concern in corporate Kingston and now the old capital, Spanish Town. THANK YOU to all who have joined us in praying for PEACE as this limited state of emergency continues.

Saint Michael, Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. KINGSTON, Jamaica - Jamaica's government declared a limited state of emergency in parts of its capital city Kingston Sunday (23 May 2010) after shooting and firebomb attacks on police stations by supporters of an alleged drug lord who faces extradition to the United States. The emergency covered the West Kingston and St. Andrews districts of the capital where gunmen fired on two police stations and set fire to another. At least one policeman was injured.

World Cup Fever

With Only 22 days until the World Cup in South Africa begins, "Football" fever has hit Above Rocks. Each morning the future stars suit up and head down to the play field in their St. Catharine uniforms (thanks to our friends in Spring Lake) to play the sport they love! Although they have fun, we try to instill in the boys some discipline, fair play and sportsmanship. Tennessee, their couch and mentor, gently yet firmly guides the boys in such a way that they will develop into good Jamaican men. After the two hour sessions they return to the compound for lunch and school.

The Franciscan Friars and Sisters in Above Rocks have being trying to share the Franciscan Charism with our people. Francis' love for the poor is shown as our Church brothers and sisters bring food each Sunday to be given to a home for abandoned handicapped children. The compound recently received a bit of a face lift with new Franciscan signage as well as a new statue.

Padua House (Hostel for visiting groups - volunteers)

St. Louis Educational and Social Centre (auditorium)

I see greatness...

As a 7 year old boy, Dr. Davidson Daway sat on his teacher's knee and as she looked into his eyes she said "Davidson, I see greatness in your eyes." Those words propelled the young boy to escape horrible abuse by his family members and go on to earn a doctorate in economics and ultimately work as an economist at the United Nations http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20050320/out/out3.html. Yesterday, following the 11am Mass, Doctor spoke to the Saint Mary's Community and challenged them to take care of the children, the future of Jamaica. His story was inspiring and there wasn't a dry eye in the Church. Next month he will be the speaker at the Saint Mary's All Age graduation.

That question was asked today and the answer came in the form of our All Age students "dressing" as the person they hope to be in the future. "Teacher" was the most popular occupation. We pray that our boys and girls can always dream and their dreams will come true!

The Fifth Annual Mother's Day May Crowning at St Mary's, Above Rocks. Needless to say Mary's trip to get here took several years, but now she is nicely ensconced in the shrine, and for the first time in many years the crowning took place in the grotto.

Newly Elected Provincial Visits

Fr James McCurry, OFM Conv, the newly elected (February '10) and installed (April '10) Minister Provincial of the St Anthony of Padua Province, USA, visits St Mary's, Above Rocks, and Missions. Fr James came for an extended weekend to visit the four worshipping communities: St Mary's, O L of Lourdes, Holy Family and Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Last Sunday Fr James conducted listening visits at each of these churches. Unfortunately while he was visiting the industrial action (2 day strike) by the teachers limited his exposure to our school children. And while Fr James was on the island he paid a visit to His Grace, Archbishop Reece.

Save The Shoes!

The John Carroll School Campus in Bel Air Maryland was the site of the Save The Shoes 5K. On May 1st over 100 runners gathered to participate in this important and unique fund raiser for our Mission. Caroline Kirby, a senior at the school, decided that her "Senior Project" would be to help the children in our school in a special way. Knowing that our runners participate in track competitions in bare feet, she decided to collect a pair of sneakers or cleats as an entrance fee to enter the 5K. Over 800 pairs were collected. Caroline is the second senior to pick the Mission as the recipient of her project. Last year Emily Burdshaw collected over 4000 books for our school and visited the mission to see first hand the good work that is happening in Above Rocks.Thank you so much to John Carroll School and especially to these two ever special young women!

"Holly In His Heart"

We don't want to build up our hopes just as yet, but at a meeting last week with the Ministry of Education it was suggested that to ease our over-crowding issues at Saint Mary's All-Age (25 grade 9 students in a classroom built for 10 children) we should build a second floor on our existing school. The Ministry will help with the cost of materials and the Church will offer their assistance. Ozzy, in the white shirt on the roof, already measured the area to build four new classrooms.

Of course money is always an issue, especially here in Jamaica. We always appreciate the generous donations made to our Mission through the Franciscan Mission Association (FMA). We can't but help think of that 1945 inspirational movie...

33 years for Mrs. Murphy!

This year marks the retirement of Mrs. Beverly Murphy, a faithful Roman Catholic Teacher at Saint Mary's All-Age. In addition to being a wife of 41 years and raising five boys, Mrs. Murphy was "Mother" to thousands of children in our School. The School Community recently "surprised" Mrs. Murphy with a "Retirement Service" where past students and colleagues gave Mrs. Murphy humorous and moving tributes. Although she is no longer in the classroom, Mrs. Murphy is an active member of Saint Mary's Church Community acting as Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Lector, Sunday School Teacher and lay leader of Communion Service. Thank you Mrs. Murphy and may God Bless You!

Province Chapter 2010

The week of April 12 - 16, 2010, the Conventual Franciscan Friars of the St Anthony of Padua Province, USA, gathered for their Ordinary Provincial Chapter. The friars gather on a four year basis to reflect on the past four years, elect new leadership and project a four year plan for the future. This Chapter was a historic event: we elected an Irishman as provincial, after 105 years of Polish leadership; we held the Chapter in Buffalo, NY, the place of our first provincial headquarters; and we voted to join our mother province - Immaculate Conception in 2014.

The three pictures below are, in order: the 103 friars gathered in Chapter; Fr James McCurry (center) our new provincial, and his Councilors; and the Minister General, Fr Marco, announces the vote for the joining of the provinces.

We hear that the women went with thier burial spices to perfrom their last service to Jesus, only to find that he was not there. So Peter and John take off running to verify the women's story. And so it was - the tomb was empty. May we, like Peter, have to courage to look in and then go forth and proclaim: He is risen, truly He is risen!
